Sadly, I'm grooving to not a lot this week, as my mp3 player went to heaven. Whilst I wait for a replacement, I'll tell you about mates of state, who I found a few weeks ago on an onion av club round up of the best music of 2008 so far, and who you have all probably heard of already, but I don't care.

Husband/wife duo from America, the new album rearrange us is bloody marvellous (only available on import - not sure about the whole itunes/emusic dealy, as I am a luddite CD buyer).

I'm sure they must get compared to Stars a lot, as Kori Gardner has that sort of high sweeping voice, but Jason Hammel's voice is a much better foil for her than Torquil Campbell's is for Amy Millan -and I say this as a fan of their work.

They've been going for 11 years, so I bought another couple of albums, and the tunes are good, but the production on this album has much more depth than any of the other stuff I've heard, and sounds fully formed, where other albums sound a little one dimension (there are only the two of them, I suppose).

Great wee things to buy if you're of an alt. country disposition. These have been booming away all week in the whippet -mobile.
1. Power Of County, "See You In Rock And Roll Heaven". Stripped-back, punky country a la Felice Brothers/ Bloodshot Records roster. Just brilliant.

2. $outhpaw, "Stop The Time" new EP/mini album with great cover of The Weather Prophets Almost Prayed on it. Perth based alcohol-soaked rock, much leaner and meaner than their 2007 debut album, which is pretty good too.

3. From the vaults, Bright Eyes, Casadaga...........bought for 4 quid out of FOPP. Splendid on many levels.

Late of the Pier released their album this week and whilst I am generally bubbling with enthusiasm about a lot of new bands, I can't remember when I awaited an album release so eagerly. It electro and they are all clearly on lots of drugs but it is utterly brilliant in a way that is hard to describe. there are just so many layers.

For the uninitiated who have not yet sampled their delights download Focker and Space and the Woods.

Your life will never be the same again. Or you may hate it, who knows. I urge you to give it a chance though.

PS if you like it you will also love My Heart Rate Rapid by Metronomy, also out of this world (as is everything they do)

A couple of quick ones re bands that I hope to see over the weekend -

The Death Set - Loud punk music with plenty of electronica. Not reinventing any wheels, but I am hoping for some rollicking noisey fun.

The War on Drugs - Despite the name, an alt-folk band with a nice lyrical nod to Bob Dylan.

If you like either genre, do give them a whirl on last.fm or myspace...
