Ladies and Gentlemen, and regular readers ![]()
Welcome to the latest of our ELM innovations, the Monday Mixtape.
Each Monday we will provide you with a mixtape, to ease you through the week. This will be a selection of great tracks especially chosen by your loyal ELM team.
Let us know what you think in the comments section, and if you are very good, we might put up some of your suggestions in future

1. Solitary Man – Johnny Cash From the American III album, this is a great tune, with a great guitar riff, by a great man.
2. Primrose Hill – Loudon Wainwright III A fine example of the work of Mr. LWIII. Heavily picked guitar, subdued vocals and a downbeat, yet somehow hopeful set of lyrics. A lot of people are going crazy at the moment for Loudon’s son Rufus, which is wierd ‘cos he’s terrible. A few know about his daughter, Martha, who is very good. Even less people have heard of the original musical Wainwright. This is a situation that will not be tolerated at ELM.
3. Crazy Faith – Alison Krauss and Union Station OK, so this Alison Krauss song doesn’t feature too much banjo, but she’s got a hell of a voice, again there’s some incredible acoustic guitar work and the slide guitar is used to huge effect. Plus, I know for a fact there was a banjo in the room when they recorded it.
4. Reasons Why – Nickel Creek Nickel Creek are an odd band. One moment producing gems like this with great harmonies, sweet lead vocal and crystal clear acoustic guitar, and the next minute hammering out 3 minute bluegrass-fests like ‘Ode to a Butterfly’ from the same eponymous album.
5. Look After Me – Hot Chip Hot Chip, proving that electronic music can actually be used to accompany proper songs, with verses, chorus and everything. Also with a message that extends beyond instructing idiots to “put your hands in the air, like ya just don’t care.” Or some crap.
6. North American Scum – LCD Soundsystem Continuing the theme of electronic music with proper songs, here’s my favourite from the album Sounds of Silver.
7. Like a Hurricane – Neil Young I thought I’d sneak in a Neil Young song, just ‘cos no one would be expecting it. I like this one a lot……..
8. Challengers – The New Pornographers It’s hard to define the sound of canadian ‘collective’ The New Pornographers. This is a particularly pleasant example from the album of the same name. They don’t really sound like anyone else, and I for one like that.
9. Leaders of the Free World – Elbow I think we’ve gone on long enough on ELM about our love of Elbow. It would therefore be remiss of us not to stick at least one of theirs on here.
10. Action Painting – Fram We reviewed Glasgow based Fram’s “This Is How We Live Now”. here Again, these guys don’t really sound too much like anyone else we can think of at the moment. And this is probably a good introduction for new listeners.
So.. that’s that for this week. We hope you find this helps you to pass some time, or leads you on to discover someone you’ve not heard before. If not, well, fine!
Peace out baby!

I take considerable umbrage with the description of Martha Wainright as “very good”.
She is not. In fact, she is a fatuous tart riding on the coattails of her family’s success by screeching unutterably terrrible songs.
Even Rufus is better than Martha, and I think he’s shite as well.
Glad we got that sorted out.
Louden is a dude, mind.
Just seen that the great Bo Diddley has died, a sad day indeed when we lose a musical legend.
R.I.P. Bo (1928-2008)
Aye, shame. Cool square guitars and named songs after himself. Respect.
There’s a thread? Great self-referential songs of our time. Clash City Rockers, theres one from The Clash. And Four Horsemen was about themselves too. Bo supported The Clash on their first US tour, actually, and gave up his bunk on the bus to his guitar. Strummer loved him.
WHAM RAP.!!!
Felt: The Ballad of The Band
Sloan: Money City Maniacs (about touring)
Devo: We Are Not Men, We Are Devo!
1.We Are the Clash by you guessed it…
2. All The Young punks (about forming the bloody Clash)
3. motorhead by motorhead
4. Action Time Vision by ATV
Big balls by AC/DC?
“Like a rolling stone” by Bob Dylan….oh,no…that doesnt work.
bob dylans 115th dream.
the ballad of john and yoko.
I am , I said…..by ELM favourite, neil diamond.
hello,
Seeing as this is our first Monday Mixtape, i just wanted to check that it was working OK for everyone.
Does the music play OK, does it give any weird errors?
We’re using muxtape.com at the moment, but that might be a temporary idea if it turns out to be shite.

that’s the link.
Ah, after his Tuesday tonic, the Wednesday Wookie appears….
Let’s have some Thursday thumpers as an aperitif to Friday’s Fives
funny cunt, eh?
Does the link work or not?
Yes works, although it took a couple of tries. Quality was good though.
Personally, I thought it was nice of me to let Westendwookie pick them this week. I’ll be reverting to type soon enough
You’ll lose an arm in the machinery if you try and set that up the mixtape. Leave the man’s work to the men
a wookies work is never done.
