Poor Bez. I think it was Rob Newman who suggested that he would have a hard time finding work post-Happy Mondays as the world wasn’t exactly full of opportunities for people who can ‘walk backwards and then forwards again in a funny way.’ He’s been declared bankrupt for the second time this decade, despite several Mondays re-union tours and winning £50,000 in 2005′s Celebrity Big Brother.
You can’t help but feel sorry for Bez, an amiable muppet who stretched precisely no talent into a 20 year ‘career’ of sorts. Indeed, it must be difficult for younger readers who missed the Mondays heyday to understand that for a while they were genuinely thought of as better and more important than the Stone Roses. There was the classic Manc arrogance and insouciance, Shaun Ryder’s completely mesmerising nutjob lyrics and then Bez, swinging and flailing like a demented octopus, maracas rattling to whatever tune was playing through his Ecstasy-addled brain. Over the course of a pretty disastrous 90′s, drugs and inter-band squabbles stripped them of their mystique and, sadly, their talent. Ryder is now a bloated parody of his younger self and obviously Bez has his own struggles.
We at ELM Towers wish the Manc Nureyev the best of luck in the future, though its hard to see where a non-writing, non-playing ‘musician’ can make much cash. Possibly another trip to reality TV beckons.
